Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located in the northwest of the town Kegalla, halfway between Colombo and Kandy in the forested hills of central Sri Lanka . 

It was established 1975 by the Sri Lanka wildlife department and is dedicated to helping baby elephants that have no mother to care for them. The orphanage also has a dedicated breeding program, which has been in operation since 1984.
